JWCI's Channel Monsters protect several Band Screens at the inlet works of this Northern Ireland wastewater treatment facility. (credit: Chris Spencer, JWCI)
JWC International, along with our distributor in Northern Ireland, Williams Industrial Services, (WIS) were invited by Michael McAlary, Functional Manager within Waste Water Services, Northern Ireland Water Limited (NIW) to conduct a site survey at Moygashel WwTW (1,100 l/sec inlet flow) in Dungannon where they were experiencing repeated operational and maintenance issues with the existing Fine Band Screens and Screenings Handling Equipment.
The cause of these problems included, amongst others, the first flush surcharge from the gravity main after heavy rain fall, flowing immediately onto the 6mm Inlet Band Screens, over loading the screens and causing them to blind. This was occurring 3-4 times a week requiring operator call outs and manual labour to clean them, especially in the winter months.
The lack of effectiveness of the existing Inlet Screens in coping with the peaking factor from first flush has resulted in screenings being forced through the entire waste water process. NIW had estimated that there was on average, an additional resource requirement of 16 man-hours per week.
A solution was proposed to Michael McAlary, recommending the installation of the JWCI Channel Monster Heavy Duty Grinders to precondition the full flow and protect the screens from overload and damage by essentially acting as a control buffer. Read the rest of this entry »

JWC International is proud to introduce the new Sludge Monster® grinder – built to protect sludge pumps, heat exchangers, centrifuges and other dewatering equipment from blockages.
The in-line Sludge Monster uses the same low speed, high-torque design as the bigger Muffin Monster®, but in a compact and economical package. Over twenty thousand Muffin Monsters are installed worldwide protecting pumps and downstream equipment.
The Sludge Monster is energy efficient – using only a 1.5kW motor to generate all the torque needed to shred rag balls and trash into small particles. In addition the low-speed design ensures a lower life-cycle cost than high-speed macerators.
“We were asked to create a product specifically for sludge applications in a compact design but without removing the toughness our customers expect from a JWC grinder,” explained Rob Sabol, Director of R&D.

Watch an inside view as the Drumscreen Monster® spray washes screenings as they tumble through the wire screen drum to the discharge end. End result is clean, odor free screenings.
The internally fed Drumscreen Monster is an excellent choice for these applications: MBRs, headworks, sludge screening, sludge dewatering and temporary screening applications such as bypass pumping.

In the scenic South African city of Pretoria, maintaining a healthy environment is a top priority, so when it came time to construct a sewage pumping station in one of the neighborhoods, engineers looked for ways to ensure reliable operations and protect the pumps from clogging with rags and debris.
After considering several options, engineers selected a pair of powerful Channel Monster sewage grinders distributed in South Africa by Pumptron and manufactured in the UK by JWC International. According to Pumptron, the pump station is a model of quality design and construction, the customer is satisfied and the pumps have not encountered any issues over the last 2 years of operation. In one of our more unusual applications, JWC International and our distributor Rotaserve installed a Muffin Monster model 30004T earlier this year inside a major European airport’s wastewater treatment facility in order to destroy cocaine filled eggs.
Apparently criminals were flushing the eggs filled with cocaine inside the airport and then letting them ride through the sewer system and into the airport’s wastewater treatment facility where a typical bar screen would remove them from the wastewater channel and deposit them into a dumpster.
Then, late at night criminals would break into the treatment facility, dig through the screenings dumpster and pull out the cocaine filled eggs.
The vandalism and crime were causing major headaches for the airport authorities and the wastewater treatment plant operators, so Rotaserve recommended the powerful, dual shafted Muffin Monster sewage grinder. With one bite from the Muffin Monster’s sharp steel cutters those cocaine eggs are dust.
Problem solved!
Over 25,000 Muffin Monsters have been installed in wastewater treatment facilities and correctional facilities to grind up rags, trash, plastics (and cocaine eggs!) that threaten to clog sewage systems. Muffin Monster grinders are a powerful way to protect sewage pumps from clogging and ragging. Dual-shafted Muffin Monsters and our larger Channel Monster grinders are installed in sewage pump stations to shred rags, wipes and debris into small particles so they flow easily through pumps and pipelines.
A new threat to sewage pumps are “flushable” wipes and disposable cleaning rags used in the home. These materials can build up inside a pump and slowly reduce its efficiency or worse, seize the pump completely. This leads to costly (and incredibly messy) maintenance and can even lead to a sewer spill. These items do not belong in the sewerage system – bin them, don’t flush them.
The Muffin Monster loves to devour “flushables”, check out our new video grind test…
